giant, miniature, fast growing, black, clumping, gold, grass, green, small, huge, hardy, tropical, cold, panda, Timor, china, edible, running, strong, useful. Bamboo is giant grass. The fastest growing plant in the world
Like other grasses it grows in two definitive forms. Python jungle sells them both The Running form spreads through a running rhizome that skips along the surface of the soil, just like lawn couch grass. These bamboos are hardy temperate plants. They can become aggressive colonisers and are not generally recommended for growing in the ground in suburban gardens. They do however provide a breeding and resting area for many smaller birds such as finches. Running bamboos produce some excellent timber and edible shoots. They also make great feature pot plants as they are shallow rooted and will grow quite tall and bushy in a pot. Clumping bamboo is a tropical and sub-tropical plant. The rhizomes on clumping bamboos are bulky and clump together joined by rhizome “necks” –like lemongrass. This plant will grow in clumps and depending on environmental conditions after 8-10 years will reach its final size. Clumping bamboos grow particularly well in Queensland. Some clumpers are frost and drought tolerant and can be grown in most parts of Australia. Clumpers produce some great edible shoots and some massive timber. They vary in size from just a few metres high to over thirty metres. They come in many shapes and sizes and make great landscaping features. Bamboos are also used extensively as windbreaks as well being used as scaffolding on construction sites in many Asian cities. Bamboo furniture has been around for a long time as well as rattan style of paneling for walls and special furniture items throughout the world. Bamboo gazebo structures are also a novelty in the west. We at Python Jungle have 9 such bamboo gazebos erected here fully imported from Asia to create a special ambience for our visitors and customers. Come join us and enjoy the pleasant surroundings here.
Cultivation generally:
Like other grasses, bamboos are shallow-rooted plants that like a lot of nitrogen. They also benefit greatly from liberal applications of mulch. Composted aged chook manure or “dynamic lifter” make great organic fertilizers for bamboo. It is important with clumping bamboos to keep the root base cool during the hot summers. Bamboos have a reputation for liking plenty of water. They like good drainage too, however. Prices vary according to size and species. We can also supply in bulk to farmers. Listed below is a list of plants currently available. Prices are for plants supplied in 200mm pots unless otherwise stated. We also have bamboo in 20 litre, 40litre and 100litre bags. All prices quoted are ex-nursery @ Howard. Queensland. Australia. |
