The following bamboo species are currently available. Prices are for 200mm pots/5 Litre bag unless otherwise mentioned.

TROPICAL CLUMPING (NON-INVASIVE) BAMBOOS

Bambusa Arnhemica-“Arnhem land bamboo” This is an Australian Native from the Northern Territory. It is a tight clumper that grows to 18 metres. Culms grow to 100mm. The shoots are edible-$22 a 200mm pot

 

Bambusa Balcooa- This bamboo is common up and down the East coast of Australia. It was brought here from South Africa by the first fleet. It is a low branching bamboo that grows to 25 metres. It has very bitter edible shoots. The timber is useful but difficult to harvest and trim.-$22 (generally also available in large bags)

 

Bambusa Bambos (or B. arundinacea)- “Giant thorny bamboo” This Indian bamboo grows to 25 metres. It is very thorny as the name implies but it has edible shoots and is reputed to be usable  timber.-$22 200mm pot

 

Bambusa Vulgaris “Vittata”- “Painted Bamboo” grows to 25 metres by 100mm. This is a striking ornamental with yellow culms and green stripes. The shoots are not edible and the timber is very starchy and prone to rot. It will grow in a wide range of conditions.-Some refer to it as the bar code bamboo...$22 a 200mm pot

 

Bambusa Vulgaris “Wamin”-“Giant Buddha Belly bamboo” is a common feature used in Japanese gardens. This bamboo has interesting shortened nodes which have a pronounced “belly”. It can grow to 15 metres but generally grows to around 6-8metres.-$22 for a  200mm pot

 

Bambusa Ventricosa “Buddha belly bamboo”- is a hedge bamboo that grows to 12 metres in good conditions, however when potted or stressed the nodes shrink and belly up. This bamboo is commonly used for bonsai and as a windbreak.. It is fast growing and frost tolerant. -$22

Bambusa Oldhamii “Oldham’s Sweetshoot Bamboo”-this a widely grown commercial bamboo. It features edible shoots and good medium structural timber. It handles a wide range of conditions and will survive temperatures to minus 9 degrees. -$22 200mm pot

 

Bambusa Multiplex “Oriental hedge bamboo”- is a small leaved bushy bamboo that makes a great windbreak or garden feature. There are around 12 different cultivars of multiplex-$22

 

Bambusa Malingensis “Maling bamboo”- is another bushy bamboo which makes a great windbreak. Culms can be used for light construction.-$22

Dendrocalamus Brandisii- This is reputed to be the tallest bamboo in the world. It has large leaves and can grow to 35 metres. It features edible shoots and heavy construction timber.-$22

 Dendrocalamus Membranaceus- This is a medium, sized bamboo which grows to around 15 metres. It has edible shoots and has useful medium sized timber- $22 for 200mm pot

Schizosta Chyum Brachycladum [Yellow] "Sacred Bali Bamboo"  This is a yellow tight clumper and grows to 12-15 metres tall .Has culms of around 50mm and is a great looking specimen with its yellow canes and variegated whitish green combination colours. A slightly more rarer bamboo and certainly worth the acquisition for your collection It is a MUST HAVE item. Sells for $31 in a 200mm pot. Larger sizes are available.

Thylacena Maxima "Tiger Grass" This is not a large plant and only grows to about 3 metres. It forms a beautiful tight base with its many canes in yellow green combination colours. Fills out to form a dense growth suitable for  screened foliage use in rows or as a single specimen. Keep well trimmed of surplus canes and leaves it will give you many years of visual and practical pleasure. It is a fast grower and looks smart. The plants come in 200mm pots @ $28 or larger sized pots/bags are available

Timor Black - A useful gracious and decorative bamboo very popular with interior designers and proud homeowners alike. Grows to around 10 metres with striking black stems after the wood has matured and looks best when kept to a dozen or so stems in the home environment. A great acquisition for collectors or anyone seeking a talking point in any garden. Look fantastic as potted plants . $27 a pot or 5 litre bag.

 RUNNING BAMBOOS 

  (These bamboos can be very aggressive colonisers and are not recommended for use in suburban gardens unless they are contained in pots or planters.)

 Phyllostachys Aurea- “Fairyland bamboo” 6-10 metre timber, shoots a great potted specimen. -$18

Phyllostachys Nigra- “Black bamboo” 6-10 metre timber and edible shoots. A great ornamental - $22

Phyllostachys Bambusoides- “Giant Timber bamboo” grows to 20 metres edible shoots and good timber. - $22

Pseudosasa Japonica- “Arrow bamboo” straight sticks to 6 metres. - $24
